uisforukelele answered Tuesday August 12 2008, 5:05 pm: If it's a site like Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, Aeropostale, Target, Macy's, Dillard's, JCPenney, Kohl's, Hollister, Best Buy, Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble, Books a Million, et cetera... (basically any BIG store) then it is safe to use it. However, if it's some random website that you have never heard of, it's better to order from Amazon or somewhere else.
As long as you're responsible about it, buying online is safe. The only time you need to type in personal information is when you are actually buying from the website, and then you will need to type in the credit card info, billing address, and shipping address. Always print out a receipt.
Yes, identity theft is possible- but very, very unlikely, especially if you shop safely.
If you can give us a link to the website you bought from, it would be very helpful. We can help you decide if it's legitimate or not. Most likely, it's completely safe.

She thinks if I buy things on the internet using her card, she'll be a victim of some evil scheme which will take all her money or steal her identity - despite the websites I plan to buy things from being 100% safe and very well known.
You should have linked to the site you purchased from, so we can double check for you. Without knowing which site you used, it's impossible to know if it's a legit site (although something tells me it's fine).
IF you want, edit your question and provide the website.
but to conclude - identity theft etc DOES exist on the internet, but it's not very common. You should always use trusted sites (chain stores/websites you KNOW are safe). [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

Yes, there are cases of identity theft online.
There is nothing to be worried about if you're using the right places to shop for your needs.
I've been a victim of identity theft on my credit card. What happened was that I received an email about my account confirmation. That's a thing you look for. Trusted websites never ask you to confirm your card by entering all of the digits nor do they ask for your social security number. Be smart about when you sign up to pay for sites (mine was through amazon). Remember which emails or screen names you've used. If they don't match up, delete the confirmation email.
And yes, I do continue shopping online but I'm very cautious when I do. I make sure it's legit before making any sort of transaction. And I only buy through trusted companies such as amazon or paypal or company websites.
Vegalicious21 answered Tuesday August 12 2008, 11:14 am: There are some very trusted websites, that are safe to buy offline. But some websites are unsafe and are known for identity theft. I wouldnt feel guilty or worried but have some cautiion when you buy online.
you could continue to buy, but its up to you. Some people get identity theft, but some dont get their information stole. Its up to you what you want to do.
And personally, i've never bought anything online, seeing as im only 15, with overprotective parents, but its all up to you!
