Quitting the Team....

Question Posted Monday August 11 2008, 5:03 pm

I've played volleyball for about 6 years- going into 9th grade- but I can't
stand the people on my team.

I really love volleyball and now that I'm going into high school, now is
when it starts getting serious.

However, I don't feel like part of the team because everyone on the team is
friends and I'm just kind of stuck outside of their crowd. Every time I go
to practice and a match, I feel like I don't belong there and it's getting
really irritating at how they treat me sometimes.

It's getting to the point where playing on the school team isn't fun
anymore and going to practices and matches just seems strenuous cause I
have to deal with their crap. I don't feel like talking to the coaches
either, because they play favorites and I don't think that it would
help.

My parents don't want me to quit the team because they say that there are
always going to be people like that, but I can't take any of this anymore
and it's getting really frusterating- I have no friends on the team and I
always feel left out and it's starting to feel like what's the point of
continuing with this if I don't enjoy it...

What do you think?

I was in the same boat a couple of years ago..i felt like i was no apart of the team and the volleyball practices and games were so serious i started getting stressed out..but you need to ask yourself..If i dont play will i miss it? Also ask yourself..What do i enjoy about volleyball? If you just completely hate it..then why stress yourself..QUIT..if you are just having troubles with the team..seek out a person on the team that oyu feel most comfortable with and talk to them about..im telling you this can go a long way..you gotta open up to your teammates..i know being a freshman is hard but if you love volleyball..stick to it and eventually your time iwll come..trust me..you just gotta keep working and never give up..if you are open and outgoing..your teammates will notice and pay more attention..JUST DO IT!

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN. I was in the EXACT same position as you were in (volleyball and in high school). I was such an outsider and I couldn't stand the other girls because they were all friends.

Volleyball is 100% a team sport, and you know that. One person can't win the game on their own. If you start to have problems with the other girls, what if it gets to the point where you never get the ball? It will be added stress on and off the court, which is really something you don't need.

I definitely do not think you should quit the sport. Join a club team outside of school. Playing on league teams are so much better. You get girls from different schools who don't know each other, so there aren't any cliques and you make new friends. It doesn't cost too much, depending on where you go, but just explain to you parents that it's affecting your social life and really getting to you.

However, I definitely DO think you should try out for your first year. Give it a chance and see how you like it. You definitely will meet at least one friend since these are girls from other schools now.

Best of luck

girl, if you love volleyball, then stay on the team. have you considered asking one or two of your REAL friends to join the team with you? that way you'll have at least one person to talk to.

have you considered joining a volleyball team OUTside your school? that's always a possibility.

honestly, i know it's hard because your favorite sport is supposed to be FUN and enjoyable, but with people who are like that on your team, it can get hard. it's totally understandable if you don't want to talk to your coach.

i agree with your parents -- life is alllll about teams and groups. try to be nice to them and join in their conversations, but if they're rude / mean and / or tease you, you should definitely not stay on the team.

i'd say join a team outside your school OR get a few friends to join the team with you.

if your team does team sleepovers or pasta parties, offer to have one at your house. that might help you out a bit. and if it gets really bad, you're at your own house so you can control things better.

hope i helped !
