I've heard good things about the antivirus programs theymos suggested, and the antispyware programs are a definite must have.
I personally use AVG free.

I've never had any problems with it.
Clamwin's pretty good too.

It's also free and open source. ]

I recommend Avast for newer computers:

Antivir for older computers:

And NOD32 if you want to pay:

Webroot is not good. I've tried them in the past.
As for antispyware, which you should use in addition to your antivirus, I recommend you regularly run scans with both Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware:

A realtime or paid antispyware is not necessary. If you feel you need realtime protection, I recommend Spyware Terminator:

Try Ad-Aware, It is a free program you scan the computer and it pretty much wipes out the viruses for you. You could also try the pay version which is 20 dollars a month I believe.
Good luck!
