Saying certain phrases like "oh my God" in the company of Christians or other religions can be considered to them, offensive. Personally, I believe in free will and freedom of speech so I would say...say what you will...to the point that you think it is necessary. If you do not wish to unnecessarily insult someone you might want to refrain from voicing the "blasphemes". I don't. It is naturally, ultimately you who decides what you should say. If you aren't Christian or even Jewish perhaps you really shouldn't worry about it at all. :D [ Anathemic's advice column | Ask Anathemic A Question ]
Missa8305 answered Monday July 28 2008, 12:21 pm: One of the ten commandments is: 'thou shalt not take the lord's name in vain.' In a more modern tongue: you shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
Which means... It would be wrong to invoke the name of god when you are not speaking to him or to use his name in a curse.
You must remember that in many Hebrew faiths, the name of God alone was holy. Some hebrews will not even write the name of God, Yaweh, instead writing Y-w-h. In ancient hebrew folklore, Adam's first wife, Lilith, gained great power by speaking the name of God which is never to be spoken. In the Hebrew faiths, you can't just throw the name of god around. This has been passed down to Christianity as well, though Christians do not keep the name alone in such high regard as their Hebrew predecessors.
And while I, personally, do not feel that saying name of God is a sin... You should probably abstain from using such language amoung particular company. While you may disagree with their beliefs... Show them the appropriate respect. [ Missa8305's advice column | Ask Missa8305 A Question ]
surferchick16 answered Monday July 28 2008, 12:10 pm: people don't like you saying that because its a part of the first comandment that you don't take the Lords name in vain. Which means, only when you're praying you can say Jesus or God, but not cursing with God's name. I say Oh my God but its a force of habit. From a religious point of view, it is offensive if someone says god******, because swearing is a sin, and your putting God in that category. Does that make any sense?
uisforukelele answered Monday July 28 2008, 10:28 am: I don't know, it's like you're not supposed to use the Lord's name when you curse. So saying stuff like "goddamn" is bad apparently. If it offends people, I try not to say it around them. But if it doesn't offend you, say whatever you want when you're not around them :) [ uisforukelele's advice column | Ask uisforukelele A Question ]
