Know the menus in case of any questions about meals and things like that. Just be extra friendly, and making jokes (that are appropriate and funny) always makes them feel welcome. If youare having a bad day, don't let your customeers know that! When dealing with rude customers, make it a game to be as nice as possible, and say things they cant really fight back to.
Overall, just use your head and be nice! :) hope i helped.

Keep going back to the table to make sure everything is alright & that they don't need anything, or if they do get it right away. Keeping the customers happy, pays off when they pay ;) Also, joking around with them or answering any questions about the food [whats good, hows it cooked, etc] also makes the tips higher. Remembering faces helps too. If you have regulars that you learn order the same drink and/or food everytime, suprise them with how much you remember & say something like if i'm correct you wanted the ____ right? They'll be pleased to know you can remember them. ♥ [ LiLMAMAx's advice column | Ask LiLMAMAx A Question ]
