When you actually buy music off of Bearshare, it's legal. When you don't pay, it's pretty much illegal. When I used it, I thought it absolutely sucked; not only was the quality bad, it was confusing, slow, but it crashed my computer. I, personally, wouldn't suggest using/downloading it; it's a waste of your computer space, your computer's system, and your time.

I do not know if it it legal or illegal, but I ddidn't like Bearshare or Limewire. Limewire crashed my computer twice, and Bearshare was too complicated for me. I think you should just use iTunes like you're supposed to =]

I've never been a big fan of it myself, I always preferred lime wire.
It is illegal unless you are paying for all the songs you download.
I downloaded ares a few months back, an Like it much better.
It's actually faster than lime wire.

In the US, it's always illegal to download anything for free that you would normally have to pay for. It doesn't matter which application you use or if you pay for the application. Downloading with Limewire PRO is still illegal.

It's not illegal to use bearshare etc. for downloading things that you would not normally have to pay for, like really old recordings and creative-commons stuff. That's why bearshare etc. isn't itself illegal.

Read my article here for a review of popular P2P networks like bearshare:

Bearshare uses the FastTrack network, and it contains spyware. I don't recommend using it.

Almost all of these programs, unless you pay for it, are illegal.

The quality? I never have liked it. It took to long, confusing, and I have always preferred limewire.

But that's just my opinion. :]
hope i helped, let me know.
