I asked about limewire, but what about bearshare. is it legal? and if it is, what is the quality of using it?

When you don't pay, it's pretty much illegal. When I used it, I thought it absolutely sucked; not only was the quality bad, it was confusing, slow, but it crashed my computer. I, personally, wouldn't suggest using/downloading it; it's a waste of your computer space, your computer's system, and your time.

theymos answered Friday July 18 2008, 5:02 am: In the US, it's always illegal to download anything for free that you would normally have to pay for. It doesn't matter which application you use or if you pay for the application. Downloading with Limewire PRO is still illegal.
It's not illegal to use bearshare etc. for downloading things that you would not normally have to pay for, like really old recordings and creative-commons stuff. That's why bearshare etc. isn't itself illegal.
