what the heck

Question Posted Sunday June 15 2008, 10:26 am

Ok, so this spring I didn't play any sports, gained some weight, then went to Italy and gained LOTS of weight. A week ago I was 5'5" and 142 pounds. I started this plan on the day that I weighed myself and I am so proud of how I've stuck to it! I'm eating plenty (1200 calories at the very minimum) and exercising enough that each day I have a 1500 calorie deficit. That's almost half a pound a day! I should be losing weight! After the first day I was 139, and now after spending a week trying so hard, I'm 140! I don't understand how this could be. I know my body is looking better than it did before, i'm happy with the results so far, but I don't know why it wouldn't show up on my scale.
I've been doing a lot of cardio and weight training, and I know my body isn't doing that "starvation" thing people talk about because I'm eating enough, so what's the problem? should I just give up?

To answer your question to the point...No you should not give up. Although most people want to look at the scales to say they have really accomplished something, they are completely wrong. Weight is only a number, what really matters is health.
A person could be 110 lbs and never gain anything even when all they drink is soda & eat 10 lbs of french fries a day, but it does not mean they are in good health - it seems more like a heart attack away.
You have to remember that although fat takes up more room on your body (the outward appearence especially) muscle weighs more! However, muscle takes up far less space (which accounts for your lack of weight loss yet better physical appearence).
You must also realize that results arent able to come in a day. It could take a while to reach a goal that you may want, but I am positive that the results will be worthwhile! Just dont give up and keep on trying hard and dont lose that determination in your soul.
With Love,
Kori

your weight is fluxtuating all the time... and honestly if you are seeing results it shoudlnt really matter what the scale says. think about it this way, you could see results on the scale but not in your appearence. consider yourself luckY!

You should NOT weight train at all if you want to lose body fat. Since you are eating pretty good, the only reason why I could see that you gained a pound is because of your weight traing, possibly a slight buildup of muscle. To burn body fat, you must eat a low calorie, low carbohydrate diet, and do extensive cardiovascular exercise with little to no weight training. You're right about the whole yo-yo starvation thing about your weight gain, because the only way that you could've gained weight by that heory is if you splurged after a low calorie day. I strongly advise that you cut out any weight training that your doing, I personally believe that is what's holding you back. Stick to cardiovascular exercise such as running, jogging, hitting a punching bag, anything that speeds your heart up, gets your body sweating and gets your body breathing at a rapid rate. Hey I really wish you the best of luck with your diet and exercise program! Remember though, your already winning the battle because you have the willpower to do what you are doing. That my friend, is most definitley more than half the battle. Good luck! Dave
