Although "beau" does not sound anything like "boo" that it is how it originally came to be. Pretty much, someone mispronounced the word and thought it sounded like a pleasant word to call their partner.
In addition, in 18th century England it meant an admirer, usually male. It is usually to either gender nowadays and typically is understood as a multitude of things, centering around affectionate terms such as: Sweetheart, cutie, girlfriend, boyfriend, and even sexy.
