Nasal..

Question Posted Friday June 6 2008, 11:18 am

I went to the doctors the other day, and I got told that I have a huge nasal polymer(I think it was polymer..something poly anyway :\)
It's about 90% in capacity, so I'm getting it removed in August.
I'm 15/f btw.
I know it's about a 15 minute surgery, and I'll be under general anesthetic but I'm a bit scared.
How will I feel after surgery?
How do you go on anesthetic..so on.
So if you've had the surgery, I'd like your experience!

Thanks!

I've done the surgery in the past- so I can tell you what the procedure is like. What you most likely have is a benign nasal polyp. It is an overgrowth of epithelial tissue (the stuff your skin is made of) that grows- at times it can block one of your nasal passages. When it becomes this much of a issue, it is an easy procedure to have it removed.

You will arrive at the hospital early. If you haven't already- you will have some simple blood tests drawn and an IV will be started- generally in your hand or arm. You will meet the anesthesiologist ( the doctor responsible to keep you asleep) and the surgeons- the attending and possibly a resident or PA who will help with the surgery. You will also meet the nurse rotator. In all you will have at least 5 people in the OR for you (2 surgeons, nurse rotator, anesthesiologist, and scrub nurse- the nurse who hands us our instruments during the surgery). You will be given medication through you IV that will make you very sleepy and then eventually you will be put asleep. You will have the breathing tube inserted into your mouth into your trachea but you will not know it.

The procedure is very quick and you may wake up with your nose hurting and with some "packing" in your nose. Usually you can take this packing out later in the day. You go to the recovery room (the tube in your throat is already pulled out when you're half- asleep so you don't even remember having it). They'll keep you in the recovery room to make sure your pain is controlled and that you can eat without getting sick. You go home with a prescription for pain killers and that will be your day.

Any other questions- don't hesitate to ask.

when i was 15 i had nasal surgery but not the same exact thing, though i did learn about the polymers. if they didnt already explain what theyre going to do it is probably just take it out depending on the size to allow you to breathe more efficiently. it should take about 6months to a year to heal completely but only about the first 5-12days i would say will you feel bad. also, a big tip!!! personally would be to get the drug to keep your from throwing up post-surgery; you never know if you could be allergic to the anesthetic and end up throwing up guts and guts of blood-not fun. you may throw up blood but dont be scared. another thing to consider, i know you may already have your dr fugured out but check and see if he does the balloon or packing. packing hurts pretty bad and is like giant cotton swabs stuck up your nose. 15 minute surgery is what they tell you but the whole experience takes longer than that.

from my experience: the hospital makes you check in about an hour or two early to check in and get dressed. no clothes except these hospital socks, underwer, and the hospital dress with not much back.. embarrassing i know. as least for me. they give you a bed and youll chill there. they may have u take a pregnancy test just as precaution or your parent will sign papers. later an iv will go into your arm they norm keep you talking then theyll put stuff in the iv soon after and you will nod out pretty quick and wake up later lightly laughing from the morphine. they make sure you can walk on your own and try to get you to eat something before you leave as precaution. you dont remember anything. at least you shouldnt be able to unless youre a major druggie and the anesthetic isnt strong enough.

I haven't had that specific surgery, but I've had others...several ear surgerys, my wisdom teeth out, and my gallbladder removed. You will be completely asleep and you won't feel anything at all. They usually give you a liquid to drink to relax you and then an IV that they put the anesthesia in. When you wake up you will feel a bit disoriented and you may feel some pain or discomfort in the surgery site. It may take a couple of days for recovery but everything will go back to normal quicker than you can imagine and you will feel as good as new in about a week or two. They'll give you a pain medicine...make sure you take it as directed and only as you need it. If you aren't having any pain don't take it because most of them can be habit forming. Just relax and go in with a positive attitude.

Well I haven't under went any surgery, but I recently had to have a test taken where I had to be put under anesthesia. Like you, I was scared out of my mind, but the process was really simple. The hardest part for me was the IV because I am not a big fan of needles. But all they did was put the IV in my arm and then when the took me into the procedure room they put me under laughing gas to make me sleepy. Then they gave the anesthesia to me through the IV. The next thing I remembered I was in the recovery room. It is really nothing to freak out about! It just kinda feels weird because you don't remember anything. Also, many people react differently to the anesthesia. After I woke up I was wide awake and I felt fine, but a friend of mine was sleepy all day and went home and just slept. Either way its not really a big deal.

Hope this helps you feel better about it! Good luck with everything :)
