Where do I go from here?

Question Posted Monday May 19 2008, 4:20 pm

I really want to write a book. I'm creative, and have a bunch of ideas. Even though I want this bad, I never feel motivated enough to just sit down and get it done.

Where can I find this motivation and organization to finish it? And if it does happen, how do I go about getting it published?

Thank you.

i started writing a book once, and i've been working on it for over a year now & it's still not even close to being finished.
i wrote it on an incident that happened in my life (sort of along the lines of a heartbreak). but i didn't use my name, or anyone else's & i changed some of the situations around.
if you know something interesting that you've heard about in someone's life, or even in your own life, or got an idea from somewhere, maybe you should write your book about that subject :)

I did some research on this a while back, when I decided to write a book myself. A few things suprised me.

First off, publishers rarely read books and manuscripts that are just sent in. They have huge piles of crap that people send in, and they rarely have time to look at them. So what they do is they look at things that agents they know have sent. One thing that can really help therefore is landing a good agent.

Another thing, apparently, is that no one wants a finished book. Whether an agent or a publisher, they want you to present them with a book proposal. This includes a few chapters, an outline, even an overview of who you think will be your readers, but not a finished product. That way you can be given guidance as you write. Once accepted you then have to meet certain deadlines as you hand in the chapters. It seems that your chance of being published is much greater this way.

You can easily dig up more on this online. Here are a few links I punched up:

As for the organisation and motivation, that can only come from you. I know of one writer who set himself a goal of 5 pages a day. I tried that, and I failed miserably. What worked for me was scribbling ideas and thoughts as they came to my head and then working them into a coherent text later.

I also very much agree with the answer below, you have to read a lot. I notice for myself, as someone who has read a great deal of non fiction, and very little fiction, what a world of difference that makes in my ability/ inability to write. You are what you read I guess lol.

I recommend using a lot of plans and outlines. Organise your notes and make sure that everything you think of you get down in writing. Once a text exceeds about 50- 60 pages it becomes quite hard to manage if you are not properly organised.

Good luck.
