Plane Flights are avoiding me to go on trips

Question Posted Tuesday May 13 2008, 2:42 am

Our class trip is going to Poland and Israel for two and a half weeks
we fly from chicago to Poland, Poland to Israel, Israel back to Chicago. One of the main reasons I do not want to go on this school trip is because I am scared of flights and I suffer from panic attacks. I don't want to embarass myself from getting a panic attack on the plane flights and I'm thinking of taking adenine I think it's called. But the longest plane ride I've been on was six hours and I never traveled over seas before. I need some advice how to handle this situation whether i should go or not.
And to add
How long is the plane flight from Chicago to Poland and how long is the plane flight from Israel back to chicago
And what's the food like in Poland I heard it's really bad and I am a picky eater
thank you

I took a trip overseas to England and Ireland a few weeks back, and the plane ride from Cinncinati to London was 9 hours, and from Ireland to Atlanta was about 10 I believe. On the flights we took, our plane had these touch-screen 'entertainment' tv's in the back on the seat in front of you. (We flew on Delta, and NOT in first class.) I'm not sure what your plane will have, but it'll have something of the sort, at least a TV above your heads every few rows I'm sure. They play movies, show you updates on the flight and whatnot, so that keeps you occupied.

Also, bring a book or two in your carry-on. Keep the window shut, and just sit back and read. It'll keep your mind off things. Or get a book of Sudoku's to solve or a magazine. Bring an mp3 player to listen to music. If you want, just take a couple sleeping pills before you board, and you can sleep through the whole thing.

I was really scared about the food in England and Ireland too, because I'm also an extremely picky eater. But rest assured- there will be McDonald's and Burger King's. In London they had Pizza Hut and KFC, too, haha. In Europe it seems they're big fans of wraps, pitas, and baquettes, and you can choose what you want on those, which is what I relied on a lot.

Hope I helped!

Ok, I can;t help with the flying part as i've never flown but I suffer terrible panic attacks so I can advise you on what to take with you if you do decide to go.

Lavender Roll ons - These are little tube of roll on sticks that you can get from health shops, you put them on pressure points on your wrists that help you relax.

Smelling Salts - I think you can get these from health shops too, they come in a tiny bottle and you smell them to calm you down. I found these to be very effective when i had an extremely bad bout of panic attacks last year.

Aroma Dough - This is like play dough but it has armoatherapy oils in, i have the lavender one as Lavender is very good for calming. You can play with it and squeeze it like a stress ball while the aroma calms you [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

These are all things that you can fit in your carry-on bag, which leads me to...

Comfort bag - I used to take my comfort bag everywhere with me, you can use your carry on bag as yours. A comfort bag is something you can put all your comforting things in just incase you have a panic attack, it also helps just knowing that if you did have a panic attack then there are things with you to help you.
You could put some aromatherapy oils in it, a drink or 2 is essential if your aloud drinks on planes, i don't know if you are (preferably water or dilute as water helps you especially when the panic brings on sickly feelings), puzzle books and magazines to distract your mind from the panic. If you are concentrating really hard on a puzzle or reading then the panic dies down because it's in the mind. A little games console just to distract you, and tissues because if your anything like me you'll get upset when you panic, also panic can cause phlegm in the back of your throat so i find its always best to get it out rather that swallow it.

I think you are so brave to even contemplate taking this journey, if you really want to go then dont let your panic attacks stop you. But if you think it will make you ill because you'll be stressing out and extremely anxious and panicy about the flying and whole trip then i wouldnt go. You'll be a long way from home and wont be able to go home if your panic attacks makes you ill, so you need to have a long hard think about what will be making you panic (if it's just the flying or is it being away from home too) and speak with your parents about it. Make sure you know and do what YOU want to do, and maybe make a pro's and con's list too about the trip.

The plane flight from Chicago to Poland is about ten hours, depending on the wind currents and the pilots. I don't know how long the flight from Israel to Chicago will be but I'm guessing about 13-15 hours.

Polish food is quite different from American. Their dairy products taste a little bit different (I think it tastes better). They love meat, and crepes. They usually serve bread with the food, and the bread is rye. I personally think all different cuisines are delicious, but you'll see if you like it when you get there. If you don't like something, remember its name and don't order it again, order something different.

As for the panic attacks, know that the chances of something bad happening are almost zero. A flight will be canceled if you are to be flying in dangerous situations (bad weather, things like that). I would recommend telling a close friend whose going with you that you're scared of flights, and (s)he'll comfort you. For now, try not to think about it because you'll just make yourself worked up and even more scared.

First of all...

that should show you the type of food there, but since you're a tourist there are most likely some places that will cater for that!

And secondly, if you have a paper bag handy (in your hand luggage) for when you feel like you might get into a panic attack.

I find it soothes me if I have music to listen to and I just close the shutter on the window, when you're taking off just hold in your stomach to reduce the butterfly sensation!

There really is nothing to be scared of, accidents AREN'T common.

Also if you're into reading equip yourself with a good book. And if all this didn't work you could always have some sleeping pills or ask your Doctor what calming remedies he could recommend
