A good camera is great, but the knowledge behind it is essential. If you're really serious about starting photography I suggest taking a class. You need to decide whether you want to do traditional or digital photography. I do digital and it's great because you can do a lot with it. If you want digital try the Canon Rebel xT. It's great for beginners and the "serious amateur" who does photography as more of a hobby.
If you do end up going digital remember that when you're taking photographs in black and white it's better to take it in color and convert it to grayscale on some sort of photoshop program later. It'll have a better quality because you are getting more variation. [ somedayilltell's advice column | Ask somedayilltell A Question ]

They have really helpful info, like what camera is the best for what kind of shot and whatnot!
