Question Posted Thursday February 21 2008, 10:33 pm
I've got problems with anxiety and depression and I am currently medicated for both. I've done well for quite a long time now. My husband and I would dearly love to have children together. I have recently seen a psychiatrist that pretty much scolded me for even considering to have children... I was hurt and shocked because I had never been treated like a handicapped person that shouldn't breed before. Are other people aware of this issue? If you are... what are your thoughts? Am I nuts for wanting children? Should I completely forget about it because of my problems? Any input of any opinion is welcome.

You are not crazy for wanting kids. If your meds are working and you don't go off of them then have kids but if you think it is becoming to much make sure to take action right away because you don't want your kids to not have you in your life.
Also if you have kids make sure to keep a close eye on how they act. If you see signs in them get them to a doctor right away. I think you are a smart and responsible adult and you can handle it. [ Cassiopea's advice column | Ask Cassiopea A Question ]

No. I don't think you are nuts.
Research and learn your facts. Find an OB who you would want to have deliver your children, and set an appointment with them to discuss this.
Since you have depression problems already, you run a higher risk of pregnancy causing it to be worse. You run a higher risk of Postpartum Depression (PPD).
Trust me, them hormones are bastards. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second child. I was NOT pregnant for all of 4 months after my first child. This time around, my emotions are literally a train wreck.
"Baby Blues" which is common after pregnancy from the hormonal issues has escalated to me being worried that I'll suffer PPD after this little guy is born.
Now, the medications are a very tricky thing. You run risk of your own mental well being if you stop taking them, yet they can also cause harm to your unborn child.
Like I said, research. There is a world of information on the internet that may help you out.
But definitely talk to that OB. Completely fill them in on your history. If you can, have your records faxed to them from your psychiatrist so they can get a more in depth idea of what's going on.

No you are not nuts for wanting children, having children is a beautiful thing and i honestly dont think that medication would affect the child but you may want to look it up on google and make sure. I think that doctors and pschyiatrists these days are just SO focused on medicine they forget the true beauties of life. Don't let anyone get in the way of creating a life. I promise it'll be the best thing youll ever do in your life. THats what my mom always says about when she had us girls. Let me know how everything goes!
