Well personally I think it is a good thing. Of course one can never ensure that each child will become fit. As you pointed out two semesters in no way guarantees that. However, its a start, and more than that it exposes kids to different kinds of exercises and sports. It might lead some to take up an activity that they may never have considered before.
School is supposed to prepare you for life as best as possible. Physical exercise has always been a part of that process, not only because of the physical and health benefits, but also because of its positive impact on the mind.
I dont know the statistics, but it seems to me that kids today are less active than they were in my childhood. One cannot over emphasise the importance of regular exercise. Even two semesters is better than nothing, and if those two semesters change one child's bad habits, then it is worth it. ]
Well, everyone should have at least 45 minutes of excercise every day. Gym class kept me pretty fit.
Later in high school, you can take it as an elective-but I think it is a required class for 2 semesters because of the overgrowing obesity rate at the moment. ]
