Slaughter houses, disgust me. I want to change slaughter houses, the killing animals can somebody tell me how i could help?
I'm only 14/f. (9th grade)
The only meat I eat is chicken, and I can't help it but i still feel bad afterwords.
Why can't farm owners cant wait untill the animal dies, then slaughter and sell it? Thats organic right? Instead of slicing its neck open with tears dripping down its eyes. ):
Supposly the islamic method makes the animal feel no pain.. is this true?
Is there something i could go to school for, to change the method of killing animals?
I want my job to help animals, but i do not want to be a vet. JUst some suggestions on anything i've asked or written would mean alot to me.

Many, many vegetarians and animal defenders alike have campaigned against the poor treatment of animals on farms and in abattoires, but without much real success.
Vegetarianism is the obvious route if you don't like the way animals are killed but there's no point kidding yourself that it will mean the deaths of fewer animals. It just doesn't happen like that. And unfortunately, waiting for animals to die is also not an option, as it negates the possibility of, for instance, lamb. Animals that die of supposed natural causes would require extensive tests to eliminate disease before being passed for human consumption. Organic generally relates to the way animals are kept and fed, rather than the way they are killed.
I would generally recommend against supporting groups like PETA. Although their work is for the good the animals, they're methods are so extreme that they are not often taken seriously by larger companies, who are responsible for the largest portion of the animal meat market.
What you could do instead is to support animal welfare groups like the US version of what is known as(in the UK) the Royal Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. If you train and work with such groups, you can contribute to the welfare of animals in farms and help to research more animal-friendly terms of slaughtering animals, while helping prevent unnecessary cruelty. If you look up groups like these, they will tell you the sorts of courses you can take before and after leaving school, to help you work your way in these sorts of careers. TheAnnie answered Monday January 28 2008, 11:29 am: the way muslims have their meat killed is more humane. What they do is just cut the neck. this way the animal instantly dies and it is better. we also believe in not killing the animal while its eating or feeding their young, becase thats cruel. its called "halal meat"
Duckies_Are_Awesome answered Monday January 28 2008, 1:40 am: Something you could do if you are concerned about the way that animals are being killed, have you considered eating Kosher meat only? In order for meat to be Kosher, and ok to eat, it has to be killed a certain way. A rabbi oversees the death, and makes sure that the animal does not suffer, that the animal is dripped completely of its blood and that it is the cleanest killing. So if you are really concerned then this might be the best way to get what you are looking for. Because PETA and all those other programs, are not going to change the world into vegetarians (sorry) [ Duckies_Are_Awesome's advice column | Ask Duckies_Are_Awesome A Question ]

They're very extreme and go to extreme methods to make their point, but they believe in what you do. I know how you feel, the other night I was eating chicken and it suddenly hit me how nauseating it really was. But it's too good to give up :).
If it helps, I keep kosher, which is similar to the Islamic method. Kosher meat has to be prepared a certain way, to make sure the animal feels no pain at all. If there's any way the animal could have felt pain, it's not kosher. A team of experts literally examins each animal to make sure it's not sick, abnormal, or anything that could physically cause it pain. [ beckyboo's advice column | Ask beckyboo A Question ]
No worries. You might remember seeing it in No Country for Old Men, where Chigurh uses it to um, kill... everyone. But at least it didn't hurt anyone! Except that one guy where his hand was shot off by it, and then he was shot with it in the chest.
EDIT:
Lets read the first paragraph of the link, shall we? "The stunning is essential to prevent the pain and suffering of the animal through the bleeding (exsanguination) process (which is itself necessary to prevent meat spoilage)." "The bolt is actuated by a trigger pull and is propelled forward by compressed air "
Alin75 answered Sunday January 27 2008, 7:13 pm: Well let me take the other questions not covered below. First, you cannot wait until the animal dies and then sell it. The meat would be no good at all. Also it would take years to raise just one animal.
All methods of slaughter are pretty ghastly generally. The way the Muslims and Jews do it varies a bit. With the Muslims (as far as I understand) it is not absolutely necessary to cut the animal's throat without stunning it first (i.e. you can stun it, then drain the blood out). With the Jewish way the animal has its throat slit and then it is hung up without killing it first. Not to say that Muslims don’t also do it that way sometimes.
As far as whether the animal feels pain, in general those associated with the practice usually claim that it does not. People on the outside sometimes claim it does. Part of the debate is how long it takes for the animal to lose consciousness. They ran a program here some years back where they smuggled a camera into one of those slaughter houses. The animal was very much alive for over a minute after they cut its throat open. It was one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen.
More than just killing, I believe that the way the animal is raised is of even greater importance. For most of those creatures, the way they die is just the final punishment after a life of torture. Unfortunately this is particularly true for chickens that are factory farmed in the most grotesque way (I would use "inhuman", but that seems like a contradiction in terms).
I don’t know what the standards for organic are all over the world. Here (in Denmark) we have a very good organic/ ecological system which guarantees pretty high standards of life for the animals (as well as no hormones, etc).
In the end only thing one can do is to change one's habits and to support organisations like PETA (try googling "animal rights organizations" or some variant thereof and you will get other options too). Just dont hold your breath, humans have a great way to justify the most horrible things as long as it is to their advantage. Our history speaks for itself.
hotpotato answered Sunday January 27 2008, 5:53 pm: Join the PETA organization. They have ideas on how to help the animal abuse cause on their site. And they endore vegetarianism and veganism and organic eating.
