Why do some people think that saying Jesus's name in vain is okay while saying God's name in vain isn't? Yeah, God is our Lord but Jesus is still a higher being.
Not that my religious view matter in this question but I am not Christian which might explain my perplexity to the situation.
In class today we were reading a play and my teacher announced that if we come by a profound word we do not have to say it. A student in my class came across "God!" as she was reading out loud and replaced the word with "Jesus!" because she claimed saying God's name in vain is wrong. I know this girl is Christian.
I completely agree that we should not use God's name in vain but why should Jesus's name be any different? I of course snapped at the girl and asked about the situation. She could not give me a straight answer so I'm wondering if someone else can. Or was she just an idiotic high school student
For myself, I am a Oneness Christian. In other words, I do not believe in a "trinity". Jesus IS God. So, it is exactly the same. [ lvHm1st's advice column | Ask lvHm1st A Question ]
prettygirlcojo24 answered Tuesday January 22 2008, 7:35 pm: You are absolutely right. Here's why.
Christians believe in higer beings. Myself being LDS (or Mormon) we believe in three, versus lets say Baptists who believe in one being, three purposes. But in this doesn't matter. In the end, we all see these beings or being as a high power and we love and look up to them. The difference in these beings should NOT differ. Christians follow Christ. Christ is God's Almighty Son. One is NOT more important than the other. Any christian who believes this is just plain wrong. They say they believe in a man who was a martyr. Yet they take his name in vain as if nothing happened at all.
So you are absolutely right. Using one name over the other is wrong and any christian should be ashamed if they see the "lesser sin" in using Jesus' name in vain instead of God's. Hope this helps! [ prettygirlcojo24's advice column | Ask prettygirlcojo24 A Question ]
ilovelila answered Tuesday January 22 2008, 7:25 pm: Jesus represents the more human part of G-d, accessible to people. That is why it is more acceptable to use Jesus. However, neither one is okay according to my beliefs, but some people have different beliefs, and the one stated above is a common one. [ ilovelila's advice column | Ask ilovelila A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Tuesday January 22 2008, 7:05 pm: Before this question, it had never really occurred to me that one would be worse than the other. And I admit it- I say both. I would like to say that she's an idiotic high school student (though that's redundant... seriously, we are all idiots...) but you've just gotta respect other people's beliefs and move on with it. There are people at my school that come up with way weirder crap than that, and I just have to ignore it because it would be pointless to argue with it. Anyway, I'm around very devout Christians a lot (truthfully I'm the "black sheep" when it comes to religion) and I get scolded equally for saying either in front of them. Going along with the Ten Commandments thing, they consider the Lord to be both God and Jesus. So I'm thinking that since she couldn't give you a straight answer... there really isn't a straight answer. [ uisforukelele's advice column | Ask uisforukelele A Question ]

and you are right
if you have a problem with saying Gods name in vain then you should have a problem with saying Jesus's name in vain
If you would like to tell her something then you should say something nicly that I dont think that you should say Jesus's name in vain either.
WhiteDestiny09 answered Tuesday January 22 2008, 4:51 pm: You have an excellent point. One of the commandments says "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain." Jesus is God's son. Maybe she didn't see it that way because there is nothing saying that you can't use Jesus' name, but believe me, i agree with you. [ WhiteDestiny09's advice column | Ask WhiteDestiny09 A Question ]
Monkeygrl answered Tuesday January 22 2008, 4:50 pm: It all depends on opinions and religion. Some people think god and jesus are the same and others think differently. She was probably just flustered by the situation, and was trying to find a different word to replace it with. I think that using God's name in vain is the same as using Jesus's.
