A PATIENT in a coma does not always lie still. They may walk, talk and do other things that may seem voluntary but are not. One way to measure the severity of a coma is the GCS, or Glasgow Coma Scale, a neurological scale to record the consciousness of a person based on this chart: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Most comas rarely last for more than 2 to 5 weeks. Outcomes of comas range from recovery to death. Some go into a vegative state where they are basically a vegetable. The outcome of comas depend on the cause, location, severity and extent of neurological damage. The most common cause for death out of comas is pneumonia, which can be contracted in patients who lie still for long periods of time.
If a patient's coma lasts longer than four months caused by brain damage, then their chance of recovery drops to less than 15%.
One way of recovery from comas is DBS, or deep-brain electrical stimulation where doctors place electrodes deep in the brain. This was used in a brain damaged man left in a coma-like state for six years where it successfully aroused basic functions of communication, movement and eating ability of a man with a traumatic brain injury, though his injuries left him in a minimally conscious state, as opposed to comatose state of zero conscious state.

Yes, you can get them from a car accident as you described.
