However, most movies are shot on studio lots in either Burbank, CA or Canada. In these cases, there are companies in charge of casting extras and they elicit the help of friends, relatives, etc. to get the word out.
For example, my choreographer passed around a list at school for people to sign up to be cast as extras in like 5 movies. I was busy those days, so I was unable to perform, but that's how it happens.
If you live in a remote location, you could always call and see where movies are shooting on location. They really do travel everywhere and anywhere they need to to obtain a great shot.

this happens when the movie is being filmed near your home and so they just take people to be in a crowd

These are typically called "cattle calls" because so many people go that they might as well be cattle. But they are kinda fun anyway. Newspapers will usually have the announcements in the classifieds and such. Another way is to go to a talent agency. However, you really need to be wary of them. They typically want you to pay them to represent you, and the amount is almost always far too much. I have yet to search the internet for info on cattle calls, but you might be able to find something. [ blwinteler's advice column | Ask blwinteler A Question ]
