IP addresses?
Is there a way to figure out who is sending me arbitrary IMs?
I'm thinking that this person might be dangerous, but before I block them, I'd like to know who they are.

The only information you can get without asking is their IP address. This will tell you their ISP and approximate location. It will be hard for you to get even this, though, since most IM clients don't give it to you. You would probably have to use a packet sniffer, which you will find difficult to use.
If they are being abusive, you can report them to AIM(or whatever). It is usually against their terms, and they'll get banned.
If it means a lot to you to get their IP address, download and install wireshark:
