Do i have to go to college or uni to get a good job?

Question Posted Saturday December 8 2007, 8:45 am

Erm hey, im 17 and ill be leaving school next year

My question is that, we've been made to make choices at school about what universities we want to go to, but the thing is, im thinking of doing psychology and its a really hard course to get into; at every university im thinking about, plus im not sure to whether i'd be able to go off to university since im not a very independent person.

So... do i have to go to uni or college to get a good well paid job? I'd like to work with children but im pretty open-minded and would really just be happy working somewhere where i would make alot of money and if it was something that i enjoyed doing.

Thanks in advance =)

If you are looking into Psychology, then yes, you would need at least a Bachelors degree in order to get a career. Pretty much any field that deals with children, including teaching, would require at least an associates degree, in addition to a teaching credential (which is not too difficult to get).
I would advise you to still apply to a number of programs and see what happens. If you live in the US, you can still apply to schools as "undeclared," so you can pick a major after a year or two. Even if you feel you are not very independent at this point, going to college will help make you more independent.
You can take some time off and try to figure out what you want to do. Or, you can even go to a community college for a couple years and transfer into a university. These days, it is best to have a college degree..even though it's not a ticket to a great job, many places only hire if you have a degree. Some people can keep building up without a degree, but it is not worth the risk. Besides, getting a job is not the only reason to get a degree. You will learn so much more about yourself, the world, different subjects, etc., as a result of going to college.
My advice to you is, just keep your options open, and try for anything...you never know. And, you are still really young, so your interests may change. Also, the majority of students who go off to college do not know what they want or how to get there...things tend to fall into place after a while, when you grow and learn new things. So, yes, I would highly recommend that you go to college.
