Leaving the house

Question Posted Wednesday November 28 2007, 11:01 pm

I am 17 years old and will be when I graduate, I live in California.

Legally can I move out of my house after I graduate? I have very, very good reasons however my mom will fight it just to be spiteful. Will I legally be allowed to leave?

You should be able to. If you're old enough to graduate high school and go to university, you're old enough to live on your own.

However, you'll run into some issues. I couldn't legally sign any documents, even though I was supporting myself and living alone!

You are still a legal minor until you are 18 years of age.
If your mom doesn't want you to leave at 17, there really isn't a lot you can do.
I suppose you can go through the court system and what not, but is that really worth it in the long run? No. You would be 18 before you could even do anything with that.
Best bet is to wait it out until you are a legal adult (18).
Try not to rush yourself- one day you will wish back for the days when you were comfortable, safe, and secure at home.
