my fat dog

Question Posted Wednesday November 28 2007, 10:04 pm

My dog went to the vet a few days ago and my dad came back saying that my dog (golden retriever) is too fat. we're giving her less food... but the thing is that i'm scared. What if she is really really hungry? I don't want her to starve. Another thing is, its winter and I don't know what to do for her to lose some weight. I know running is a good way for dogs to lose weight, and swimming.. but its super cold! I usually play tug-of-war in the house with her, and like chase her around trying to get her, which by the way is really fun, but my mom complains that she sheds too much hair and how my mom always has to clean after her. HELP

Well I don't know if you have a yard that your dog can run free in, but some dogs love to run through the snow, and that's exercise. But if your dog can't run free, my advice for you is to get dressed up all warm and go take your dog for walks on a leash! :) and if your dog always has dog food and water down, he won't be hungry. He'll eat when he's hungry. It's best for you to not feed your dog people food. You want him to live the longest and healthiest life he can, right? So feed him just dog food (which is good for him) and maybe those bones (treats made for dogs) once in a while. Good luck! :)

I read an article about an extremely obese dog who lost alot of wait on Science Diet. She may act like she is starving but she is being dramatic to get you to feed her more. As long as you are giving her the proper amount of food for her size (look it up). Don't worry about starvation.

FOR THE SHEDDING:
1. Brush the dog thoroughly
2. Wash the dog and get down to the roots
3. Do not towel dry, use a blowdryer (It will be messy do it a smsll enclosed room)
4. Brush the dog again

Tihs will get most of your dog's hair out the room you you blow dry her in will be messy but it is better than random clumps throughout the house.

Golden retrievers do NOT feel the cold, especially if they're running around outside. Have you ever run around in circles in the freezing cold? Warms you up pretty fast!

How much are you feeding her? A large dog should eat a maximum of two cups of food twice daily. A lot of people over feed their dogs.

Also, if she is fat, she'll live off of her reserves. There's no risk of starvation.

All retrievers NEED their share of action. having one, i know they need some exercise to stay in shape, else you might be risking a future arthritis, loss of power in legs etc.

test the waters first, take him for a walk. if hes comfortable with it, (which will be the case mostly) make it a regular thing.

Inside the house you can try throwing things and making him/her fetch it. Also, some bouncy ball toys should help a lot.

They NEED exercise. And if you are lowering the quantity of food, make sure you have all the essential stuff going in there. Check the composition of your dog food. For a change, mix some chopped vegetables to the normal food (Increase the veg content slowly).
Cheers
