Dentist's can tell alot of things, so it's quite hard to fool them. I once remember someone went and he said "you've been eating polos!" I guess that was after long exposure to the sweets though.
As for the black dot, it could be a number of things. Something simple like a blood blister or something which may need treatment. If your dentist misses it, to reassure yourself, point it out and ask what it is.

Dentists can also tell if a patient is bulimic because the acid from their vomit screws with the back of their teeth - that doesn't mean that they'll accuse you of having an eating disorder if you've had the stomach flu a few times, you know? :)
