Jobs in writing/journalism

Question Posted Tuesday October 16 2007, 5:53 pm

I am interested in gaining experience in the field of Journalism, preferably magazine writing. I am having the hardest time finding internships or jobs related to this field... I live in the Los Angeles area and am willing to work pretty much anywhere in LA county.
Any ideas?? Websites, search engines, job searches, etc.. Thanks!!

You have to know someone.

Let me see your resume. My family is in the radio broadcast journalism business, so if you'd like to start there, and you have stuff on your resume, I'll see what I can do.

Don't try now...all writers are about to go on strike. Wait until the next contract.

Usually in each community especially in a small town there's a local paper that comes each week with fliers. Those papers need freelance writers and volunteers. You can usually find a writing gig there and an editor who needs page designers and or photos done.

That's what I did. You should also Google for news agencies that employ teens and college students up to the age of 24 to do writing. Some of them are attached to AP, Reuters, CP or large newspapers plus have their own e-zines.

You should check out www.ypress.org as it's amazing and they have won accolades for covering elections etc etc. If they don't have room for you they'll steer you in the right direction.

Another bureau to get your stuff published in is Young People's Press www.ypp.net They have 7 e-zines and used to do sections in The Toronto Star and Halifax papers. no, you don't need to be a Canuck or Torontonian to write for them.

Another site to check out is teenink.com It's a popular Web site and actual magazine written for teens by teens with the help of professional editors.

Another idea is to call your local community access station and tell them you're entering the field of journalism and need experience as a volunteer. They could get you researching, learning how to use equipment and reporting as part of their volunteer programs provided you are 18.

A lot of jobs are unadvertised in this field. If you want to work somewhere or be an intern call the editor at the publication or the news director or producer of a show in your area and ask if they'll meet wth you or agree take you on as an intern/volunteer.
