Tomorrow in gym, we will be doing the mile run/walk. I was just wondering if anyone could give me good advice on getting a good time, or not getting really tired, how not to get that pain in my side, and maybe how to breathe or something. Thanks!
bemyshoulder2crion answered Monday October 1 2007, 10:12 pm: I must have ran the mile in gym a billion times! I can honestly say I hate running! I know how you feel... since 5th grade, I've gotten a lot better at making it through the run alive and with a pretty good time, heres what I tried:
1. This simple breathing exercise sounds so easy, and it is! Just breath in through your nose and out through your mouth as steadily as possible. You may think you look or sound ridiculous, but it really does help to not lose your breath, and to make it easier to keep going.
2. Take wide steps, not to the point that you have to strech so far its putting you in pain, just so you have a wider stride.
3. Run with someone you has a similar pace to you. You guys can keep eachother going, while keeping casual conversation to help the time pass quicker!

If you start out running and think, oh yeah, I'm ahead of everyone!, you won't be to happy for long. You will have wasted your energy, and everyone will pass you and the race will be over by the time you restore your energy. Bacically jog/run. Also, drink tons of water. But, drink it in moderation. Too much water at one time can leave you feeling nausues. Drink a few sips EVERY minute. If you don't get enough water, you'll go even slower and you will feel horrible afterhand. Trust me, been there done that. Remember,
PACE AND SIP!

kennax3 answered Monday October 1 2007, 9:54 pm: Breathe slowly, but not heavily. Don't huff and puff. It just strains your lungs, and makes breathing harder. Pace yourself. Don't start out with a full burst, or you'll get rid of your energy right away, and you'll pretty much be slow. Just run at pretty much the same pace the entire time. And don't go right from walking to running. It can mess you up and make things harder. For instance, get faster/slower little by little. thelaura answered Monday October 1 2007, 9:53 pm: Start off steady - don't go too fast and waste all your energy. You should speed up at half a mile and gradually get faster afterwards. Breathe nice long breaths (not too hard)- in through nose, out through mouth. Perhaps carry a water bottle with you and take small sips if really necessary.
Just don't over exert yourself and you should be fine.
If you have any other mile runs coming up in the future, I suggest having a few practice runs before hand to train yourself, to know what to expect and become better.

Breath in through your nose and out of your mouth. That's pretty much all you can do since it's tomorrow! Make sure to keep hydrated, but don't drink a lot of water right before you run or it wont stay down long.. if you know what I mean. Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine!
