Jeanne answered Monday October 1 2007, 1:47 am: Okay, well I'm a gymnastics coach, and I really hope you'll take my advice. For the cartwheel, it's fine to practice at home. But for the back handspring... you really should NOT try to learn that on your own. You could break a wrist, an arm, or even your neck! Besides that, you won't learn it correctly on your own... you need good instruction!
Please, find a gymnastics or cheer gym and take a tumbling class. All gyms have beginning tumbling classes, and they are FULL of middle school and high school girls who want to learn flip flops for cheer tryouts. You will not be the only one just learning! And trust me... no one is gonna make fun of you or think badly of you for being a beginner! Everyone in the gym is used to seeing girls who are just learning... that's what gyms are for!
Also, if you really want to get your back handspring for tryouts, start NOW! Even with the best instruction, it can take several months to learn. The sooner you get started, the better. I can't tell you how many times I've had girls come to me in a panic because they HAVE to learn a flip flop by "next week!" And I have to tell them, sorry, that just aint gonna happen!

But you really shouldn't be doing this alone. Cartwheels are fun to try to teach yourself, there isn't much danger in them as other things. But a backhand spring you really do not need to be teaching yourself. You can seriously harm yourself and plus, you said so yourself you're really afraid of getting hurt. The factor is going to keep you from learning anything on your own. You need to either get a coach at a gymnasium or a friend that knows what she is doing to help you with them. You can have all the instruction in the world but they will not help you one bit. You need to know there is someone there to spot you in case something happens because you're not going to be able to let go and just let yourself into a back handspring even with the instructions.
