Question Posted Tuesday September 18 2007, 11:28 am
I just turned 17, I'm a girl. I get these crazy ideas sometimes. Now that I'm depressed, my crazy ideas have taken over. Today I stole my mothers credit card and ordered a plane ticket to another country. I leave tomorrow, without telling anyone. The question is: what do I do when I get there? I have a little money. Do I get a hotel room and then in the morning go look for a job to be able to keep paying for the room? Or do I find a church, see if they have the answer I'm looking for? Try to enroll in a highschool somehow? I've always wanted to live in America. This might sound stupid to you, ridiculous, I know. I've told one friend about it - so yes, I understand this doesnt sound normal to others. But it's something I'm going to do - so you might as well help me. I'll completely start over, new name, new life, new everything. Im not an idiot, I know I'll have to come back eventually, I understand a little money wont get me far, and that my parents will call the police and whatever. I get it. I get that my life will be completely ruined when I get back. But it's worth it. I have to do SOMETHING. I can't keep feeling this way. So..back to my question: what do i do when I get there? I'd like to have a list.. so far all I've got is:
1) Arrive at destination.
2) Get hotel-room.
3) Job (?) School (?)

I know that you probably won't change your mind because of this- but the person under me is right. You have to be a legal citizen of the US (which I'm sure you aren't) to do ANYTHING here. Sure, you might find a sleazy hotel that will let you get a room (even though that's illegal, too because you have to be at least 18 to get a room anywhere and they ask for your drivers' liscence and everything)
Public high schools require some kind of parental consent before enrolling... Believe me, you won't get anywhere with this.
I read a story in a magazine about a girl who was your age who bought a plane ticket to another country without telling anyone- and when the plane landed in the other country the police had arrived and they were like "so and so you're under arrest". And so i assure you- the same thing WILL happen to you. You will even have to go to jail for running away. You will have wasted your mom's money and she'll be mad as hell at you and then you'll never have her trust again.
Please just think about what I've said before you do this.
also- in less than a year you get to be an adult and THEN you can move to the US and go to college here LEGALLY!

You'll be in a serious situation, if you really do need to get away thats fine, it can really help to have a change of enviroment (it did wonders for my depression) but you have to be prepared.
Being homeless, jobless , broke and alone and in a stange new place where you know nothing or no one is not going to help your depression, it's going to make you anxious and your depression worse.
Have you thought about different senarios, if you get into trouble, where will you go? Do you know where police stations are, hospitals ect.
If you can't enroll into a high school, then what?
Or if you can, where will you get the money to buy the clothing and equipment?
You can't go to school AND work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay for rent.
What if you cant find a job, or enough jobs to earn enough money for rent?
What if no one wants to rent a place to you because of your age, no references, lack of money ect.
And it's not just rent, it's water, electric, gas bills, phone bill, line rental, then there's your food bills.
