"fuera" Vs. "afuera"

when do you say "fuera" and when do you use "afuera"

no not the future tense of "ir" or w/e but like i read in some spanish story "fuera" and am very confused

Afuera means outside, fuera means he/she was. Maybe you were mixing them up because they sound similar, but they're completely different lol.
