car.. turning 16 in april

Question Posted Tuesday September 4 2007, 5:29 pm

ok well im turning 16 in april.. i know thats like awhile from now. but like my dad is like against having a car when youre 16 and where i live like every kid gets a car when theyre 16 and its like essential to like get around and stuff. i mean it wouldnt be THAT big of a deal to me except for the fact that my parents are like you cant drive in cars w/ ur friends that just got their license. what do they expect? that theyre gonna drive me around for the rest of my life? any ways to convince them that i should be able to get a car (not neccesarily for my birthday just like sometime soon). also what are some ways to make money? i cant really get like a good job right now bc of school but i want to get one this summer. how much do like used cars cost?

Well, your parents might be saying that now, but chances are, once you get your license, they'll change their minds pretty quick. And without you having to do or say anything! You see, this is how it works:

When you first get your license, they'll be really strict about your driving. Then they'll start letting you take the car to the store or to run errands for them, or to drive yourself places. And suddenly they'll realize how convenient it is that you can drive! After 16 years of chauffeuring you everywhere, they're finally "free"! And next thing you know, you're taking the car whenever you want, and then they're getting you one of your own.

Trust me, it won't take long. That's how it was for me, and for a ton of other people I know. So just let it happen naturally. If you whine and beg or make a big deal about it, it will just remind them of their "decision" not to get you one, and it will take longer for them to come around.

Not every 16-year-old has a car or are fully licensed to operate one without an adult with decades of experience in the passenger seat.

In some cities, provinces and maybe states there is a thing called graduated licensing where you spend 2-3 years driving with an adult and then must advance to level 2 and then a full license.

The reason your parents don't want you driving with a newly licensed 16-year-old is that they are more susceptible to accidents and that's especially true if friends are in the car and there is music.

The 16-year-old doesn't have as much experience to be able to control a car the way someone with 20+ years like your parents can.

A car at your age is non-essential. You can go to the mall, park, concerts or wherever else using a bus pass or the subway if needed be relatively easily and cheapily.

You wouldn't want to own a car at your age anyway because of gas prices, huge insurance bills for a new time driver and lease and or monumental bills for repairs on any used car.

In order to get a car be it used or new you need to have a job to pay for it and all the things mentioned above and you must have a line of credit and great credit at that for a loan or even to lease a vehicle.

Mom and dad can always put a car in their name and let you drive it but you have to do a lot more than being their daughter to deserve that as it's a tough sell with any parent.

I recommend that you use public transit for now as it's sensible and get your learner's liscene and really progress as a driver before getting your own car. Your parents can always let you borrow the car when you work up their trust by showing you are responsible behind the wheel.

Right now I would worry about getting your learner's permit and shelling out roughly $1,000.00 U.S. for solid defensive driving instruction with at least 25-30 in car sessions/in class as well. It's hefty but go for the best driver's ed school. Complete that and you'll have leverage about a car.

Just remember not every kid comes from a background where their parents can afford a car for themselves let alone their kid(s). Asking to borrow the car or taking transit to get places is more what you should be looking to do right now.

Trust me on this. You don't want a car. Ask your friends to pick you up and drive you around. TRUST ME. I'm 16, got my lisence last month, and I HATE driving now. Paying for gas, people asking you to drive them everywhere with no gas help, you'll be mad eventually. Just ask your friends to ride you around and pick you up.

BUT

An ok used car costs from 3,000 to 5,000. Try to get a used honda civic or accord if you decide to buy a car anyways. Great cars.
