my knees crack when they bend.

Question Posted Monday September 3 2007, 3:39 pm

im 18/f and ive had this problem for years. everytime i bend my knees they crack. it sounds like a nutcracker. its gross. even happens when im simply walking up the steps. anyways, i want to know ::
1. what this is? i went to the doctors a few years ago and he said just hold my legs out for a few minutes at a time every night. this did nothing. and
2. if i work out and do squats, which will require me to bend my legs constantly, will it just damage my knees more?
im afraid i might be waring away the cartlidge or something. if anyone has any info on this id reallyyyyy appreciate it!

sorry its so long.

Don't worry about it. This happens to me all the time. For example, my knee just cracked a little when I stood up to get a drink. It's not a big deal. I had bursitis (inflammation of the knees) and it's where whenever I would twist my leg, my knee would start cracking. It was nothing major, I just had to stop exercising for 10 days and take Motrin, and it's getting better. (My dad had knee problems, he had to have some synovial fluid drained from his knees when he was younger. My doctor said it probably was just genetics.) I would probably lay off of working out for about a week and take Motrin; see if that helps.

If any problems still persist, make an appointment with your doctor.

You know what, I have that too and have never taken it upon myself to find out why. So I did some research on an orthopedics site and this is what I found:
"Joint cracking, commonly in the ankles and knees when walking up steps, is usually a benign condition that you do not need to worry about. While the exact cause is hard to detect, you are not doing damage to the joints when you hear them crack.
If you have pain associated with the cracking joints, then you should be evaluated to make sure there is not an underlying problem. But the average snapping ankles, or creaking knees is not a problem."
I hope that was what you were looking for! :]

my knees do that too, only sometimes tho like when i bend down to sit on the floor, but it doesnt do that all the time.
anyways, i think that you should go back to the doctor and make sure nothing has been damaged, i dont think its that serious though. hope i helped!

My tore my ACL a year ago and had to do therapy. And they relized my knees cracked a lot. So with the therapy for my ACL they did knee therapy. It helped the knee that didnt have the tore ACL, but the knee that does, still cracks from surgery. Try going to therapy. I cant really tell you what kind of things to do bc all my therapy was mixed in, and I dont know which was for my ACL or which was for my cracking knees.. sorry.. try going to therapy tho..
