You look like a good person to ask this...

Question Posted Friday August 31 2007, 6:40 pm

You said in your little biography that you are taking courses in counselling and doing other things related to mental health. I am a 16-year old girl who is interested in psychology. I think it is really interesting, and I read all sorts of books on it, etc. I would like to have a career in it someday, but I am really shy. Do you know of any careers in psychology or counselling that don't involve a lot of talking to people?

Thanks!!

I think it's great that you are interested in psychology and councelling, it is such a rewarding thing to be, there are people who give telephone councelling and email councelling, but to be honest i don't think it works aswell as face to face because you need to be able to look at a persons body language aswell as talk to them.
You could volunteer to work for the Samaritans or another helpline (Samaritans is the main one people call her in the UK when they are depressed).
You say that you are a shy person so you might find it easier to do one on one councelling, working for yourself rather than an organisation.
That way, you can chose your clients, and chose whether you want them to come to you or if you are willing to give home visits.

I'm combining mine with complementary therapies, i'm thinking of studying reflexology, indian head massage, indian shoulder massage and reiki as these are relaxing things so you dont have to speak with your client as you treat them.
That maybe something you'd be intesested in.

It will also appeal to more people as you will have alot more to offer that the other competition out there, and will look great on your CV.

Good luck xxx
