Sprinkle salt on an old towel, (I have heard of
people using a paper sack or waxed paper too)
turn the iron on high and iron the salted surface.
It should come right off. If its really built up
you may have to do this more than once.

You can also try using vinegar. Never use an abrasive cleaner on your iron. It will scratch
the surface and cause more problems in the future.
Use a net mesh type of sponge or a wash cloth only.

Well you have to UNPLUG the iron, and take it over to the sink. That stuff is baked on so it will take some work. Steel wool, like a brillo pad, or some comet on a sponge, and scrub it off. Be sure to get it all, and then be sure to rinse it well. Let it dry before using it again
