I was just wondering, I just got my haircut and highlighted and I straighten my hair after I blow dry it. I noticed that my ends get split when I do that. Is straightening bad for my hair??

rainbowcherrie answered Sunday August 12 2007, 6:55 pm: I blow dry and straighten my hair (which is also colour treated) on a daily basis. It can cause damage but I use a heat protection spray before drying and then again before straightening, which does help an awful lot. You might also want to use a leave in conditioner or serum as this will keep your hair looking sleek. A straightening cream is also a good option and this will minimise the amount of time your hair is exposed to the heat of the straightening irons.
Once every three months, invest in an intensive conditioning/hot oil treatment (you can buy these fairly cheaply in most places that sell shampoo and conditioner). This will help keep your hair healthier for longer.
If you have fine or thin hair, it's usually best to avoid blow drying and straightening on a daily basis. If this is the case then you may be able to apply straightening cream and heat protection spray before blow drying your hair with a paddle brush. With fine hair, you may not need to use straighteners after this. If you do choose to use them on fine hair, then it is especially important to use heat protection products as otherwise your hair will be damaged quickly.
If you have thick hair, the above technique can also be used to minimise straightening time.
It is also important to have your ends trimmed every few months, especially if they are split, as this will prevent them splitting the whole hair shaft. Regular trims also keep your hair growing at a steady pace. [ rainbowcherrie's advice column | Ask rainbowcherrie A Question ]
