is there anything besides running that i can do to get in shape for track & field/cross-country?

I would do leg and arm weights at your gym. They really help:]
Also, email your coach and ask him this same question. He's the one that's going to be deciding how much you participate in meets, so his opinion is top priority.

Bike ride, play DDR, go ice skating, ect. If you have workout machienes at home do leg excercises. ]
you can bike ride, ice skate, roller blade, and use a tredmill. GoOd LuCk!!! ]
try doing leg lifts and hamstring stretches...they'll help you out keep your legs fir and toned. ]
