I need to stop making excuses and know the truth.

Question Posted Wednesday August 1 2007, 8:12 pm

Please read all of this. I really do need help and a second opinion, and I have no one to talk to.

I'm 15, 5'1 and 135 pounds. I have a petite frame, and obesity runs in my family. I used to weigh less, and I know it shows that I am heavier than I used to be but when I look in the mirror I don't see myself as fat and obese. I just don't know if others see me that way and I just don't realize it. I went to the doctor three weeks ago when they told me how much I weighed and how tall I was. The nurse said my weight was perfect for my height, but the frantic research that I've done says otherwise. Sometimes I get really down on myself and begin to see it, but I don't know.

I think I've gained weight because during school I ate a lot because of stress and the cafeteria, but this summer I've been cutting back A LOT. I've been ordering healthier items when I eat out, I've stopped eating between meals, and I've stopped eating when I'm not hungry. Sometimes I slip, but... overall I think I'm doing a decent job. Hopefully, I've lost at least 2 to 3 pounds but I have no way to be sure since I have no clue where the scale in my house is.

Bottom line is, I don't want to beat around the bush or anything so I'm just going to ask. Do you think I'm "fat?" I've been really sad lately because I've been accessing these internet BMI calculating websites that have been mostly saying "I'm at risk of being overweight." One even said I was overweight by 25 pounds. But according to one of my friends, they thought I looked around 110 or so.

I don't know if it's all relative or not. Do people just carry their weight differently? My friend is 5'6 and weighs 140. She also eats much more unhealthy than I do, and no offense at all to her, but she does look somewhat heavier than I do. Not but much, but she does. But she only weighs 5 pounds more than I do and she's 5 inches taller. I just don't understand.

Thanks in advance, God bless.

I forgot to add that my pant size is a 0-2. This also confuses me... :-(.

No offense, but I think you're overweight. No, I KNOW you're overweight. That might seem rude, but its the truth. I use to weigh less than you and I am the same height and my doctor told me to lose some weight and I did. I'm not trying to be rude at all and you can rate me low for this, but im not going to sugar coat answers like everyone else is to make you feel better. Obesity runs in your family and if you don't gain control soon then you will become very overweight. Right now you are only 3 lbs overweight, but if you continue to eat you will become even heavier. Everyone carries their weight differently and just because you dont look your weight doesn't mean you shouldn't knock off a few lbs for health reasons.

Now, this weight could be because you are very muscular and if it is then there is no reason to lose weight, however I don't have a picture of you so there is no way of me knowing. I'm assuming that some of it may be muscle because of the way you described yourself, but I can't be sure and if it's not i think you should try ot lose a few lbs. I'm not talking a lot maybe just 8-10 lbs. No more.

hope I could help;

I'm no expert- but I think you're not fat.

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

According to that- your BMI is 25.5. So- apparently you're overweight. But that's by .5, really. I think that you shouldn't take that number and beat yourself up about it. I think you're right in saying that "people carry themselves differently".

I think that your height is the only reason that you're considered "Overweight". You have less height to distribute weight- so the BMI calculator sees it as you having a lot more weight per inch or whatever than you should have.

If you wear a 0-2.. I think its safe to say that you're NOT fat.

And you shouldn't worry about it- live life and be happy- eat what you want- but do what you want.

Personally- that motto of "eat what you want" hasn't helped me out much.. lol!

I will tell you honestly that, if obesity runs in your family, you might have trouble with your weight in the future, especially because you are less than average in terms of height.

However, you seem to be doing a good job by watching what you eat, as long as you don't go so far as to skip meals. If you want to make sure you don't gain more weight in the future, get a little more exercise.

I don't think you are fat. I'm 5' 2" and 15 years old, and I weigh 120 pounds with a pant size of 5-7. Everyone carries their weight differently, depending on how large their bone structure is, where their body stores fat, their height, and a lot of other factors. BMI gives you an idea of how overweight/underweight you may be, but this is only a rough estimate, so don't panic if it says you are at risk of becoming overweight. If your doctor really thought you were overweight or at risk, they would talk to you about diet and lifestyle changes, but I take it that they haven't, and you can trust your doctor's opinion.

If you are still worried about whether or not you are fat, you can always ask your doctor next time you see them. A good doctor will give you an honest answer, whether or not it is the nicest thing to say (so you can trust them when they tell you that you aren't fat ;D).

Personally, even though I don't know you and am certainly not a doctor, I really don't think you're overweight. Don't worry so much about it!

Your are at a perfectly fine weight. Stop researching the weight sites and charts and all of that junk. The doctor/nurse is a perfect person to find out the truth from, she said it was a fine weight, and it is. Exspecially for your height. People do carry their weight differently. Taller people shouldnt weigh in between 100 and 130 because they'll look like toothpicks! No joke, my doc told me the normal weight for a really tall person was like, in between 130 - 180. {For the average tall teen}. Your weight and height mesh well. YOUR JEAN SIZE IS A 0-2 WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT? Your not fat. If you want to stay fit, or maybe shed a few pounds {which you dont need to shed anymore, but it never hurts} make sure you eat healthy, and exercise. And stop looking at those darn tootin charts! There no help, and they could be false. Hope I helped! Happy Summer!

Everyone's built differently. Someone could be ten pounds heavier than you and look skinner, or ten pounds lighter but look overweight. Your doctor's said you're fine the way you are, and you eat sensibly. Stop stressing so much over a number!
