Another Question About Sexual Predators

Question Posted Monday July 23 2007, 4:21 pm

After many people have told me that I should keep doing what I am doing, (posing as a 13 year old girl on chat sites, tracking and logging potential sexual predators), I have decided to keep doing it.

I even started a website about it, and I modeled it after, perverted-justice.com. On my site, I show the chat conversations and I give the predator's MSN screen name.

Some people have told me it's wrong to give out these people's MSN addresses. Someone even said I could get into a lot of trouble, or arrested for it. But shouldn't I be allowed to put potential predator's screen names up to warn people? They're the ones that started talking to an alleged 13 year old. What do you think?

Congratulations to you for taking a pro-active stance against sexual predators!!!!

It does concern me a little however that in doing so you may be putting yourself at risk as it may be traced back to you.

Is there anyway that you could join an organisation or even talk to preverted-justice.com about how to set yourself up safely?

In the UK sexual predators are "protected" and although we have a Sexual Offenders Register the information is not made avialable to members of the public. I honestly do believe that these sexual predators should be named and shamed in order that no other child should suffer at their hands.

It is children who need to be protected and I have to say that if, by putting a predator's screen name on your site, you have saved even just one child the agony of a such a cruel and horrible experience then I have to say - you have done the right thing.

Take care!

It is not a good idea.

It exposes you to backlash. Your website can be traced back to you.

If you want to do something like that do it within the frame of an organization, that way the organization is as far as they can back trace whats going on. Setting out on a personal vendetta is a good way to get someone in through a window at 4 am trying to find your bedroom.

Seriously.

There's something important to consider here.

It is entirely possible to take a registered domain name and look it up on any number of databases, and find out not only exactly who owns it, but the owner's home address and phone number as well. I say this because it's entirely possible that you may "out" a very dangerous person someday, and they may choose to retaliate.

If you want to do some good against online predators, team up with a site like perverted-justice and work with them, not on your own. People can do more good against this sort of thing when they work together.

I think that putting their screen names on a website is a great idea. It is completely fair to the sexual predators. If they don't want their screen names on the website then they should stop doing things that could get their name on the website. And also, it's just a screen name. It's not like you are putting up their name and address. No one will really know who the sexual predator is; unless they know the person with the screen name. It's also a great way to help other people be safe from sexual predators.

You can get in a lot of trouble for posting people's e-mail addresses, home addresses or anything that identifies who they are and or calls/implies they are a sexual predator or anything negative that could damage their reputation or cause havoc with their lives.

If it turned out they did nothing wrong or anything they could be charged for you could be sued for slandering them or even harassment.

Instead of posting e-mail addresses and names of suspected child predators let the professionals do their jobs and make an arrest or file charges by anonyymously handing information to the proper authorities.

Sites such as Preverted Justice and television networks like NBC and Chris Hanson's reporters on "Dateline NBC" all know to let the police do their work and do not act alone. They're always doing it with the knowledge and participation of the police as is AMW.

While you want to help the best thing to do is dismantle your web site. Be who you really are on the Internet and lurk in chatrooms and take details down if you think someone went over the line and is targetting kids. Give the info to the pros.

This is all best left to the cops to handle. If you see something suspect get in contact with them but to put up a web site and try to get justice in the manner you mention is asking for legal and other trouble for you and your family.
