My mom always trimmed her toenails incorrectly when she was younger. So she won't take me to a doctor to fix it. She made me soak my feet in a water full of epsom salt. What will that do to my toe?
I trimmed my toenail, thinking it would stop hurting. Wrong-o.
Then she said something about digging into the skin in my nail and ripping out the nail. WHAT IS THAT ABOUT? no one said ANYTHING about that.
I don't want to leave it untreated because I don't want an infection or anything.
I'm actually not sure if IT IS an ingrown toenail though. I've seen pictures and my nail doesn't even look like it.
Help?
How do you get rid of an ingrown toenail without surgery or whatever?
I've been taking ibuprofen, but doesn't do much.
Should I wear socks?

Amarete answered Monday July 30 2007, 2:06 am: My dad and I both have this problem. Let the nail grow out, and when you trim it, trim it towards the middle and don't cut the part on the edge that goes into you skin. If you cut that part it will grow back even more messed up. Also, be sure to wear loose, clean shoes and change your socks daily. This cuts down on the sweat and other nasty things that can build up around your foot, and it gives your toe room to grow properly. Lastly, pour hydrogen peroxide over it every so often. This will keep your toe cleaner by killing bacteria.
orphans answered Saturday July 21 2007, 6:13 pm: i guess you could wait till it grows out, and to help the pain, cuz a triangle into the middle of the nail, , so its an upside down triangle. these will help it out, i read it in a magazine:) [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]

Heres some of what i found..
"An ingrown nail occurs when the skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin."
TREATMENT.
Soak the foot in warm water 3-4 times daily.
Keep the foot dry during the rest of the day.
Wear comfortable shoes with or open toed shoes.
Take ibuprofen or for pain relief.
If there is no improvement in 2-3 days, or if the condition worsens, call your doctor.
