Question Posted Wednesday July 18 2007, 7:59 pm

hi, does anyone have any experience with using witch hazel to clear up acne? if so i have a few questions..:
-how much is it?
-do you just put it on your face and leave it or do you put it on your face and rinse it off?
-does it help oily skin be less oily?
-does it dry out your skin?
-has it worked for a long time?

any answers to these questions and anything you can tell me about witch hazel would be a great help! i've tried everything to clear up my acne and nothing has worked. so thank you so much!!

Hi there,

I had acne all through my teenage years and tried everything to get rid of it! Both prescribed medicines and over the counter stuff. Lotions, potions, pills, creams, cloths that promise you clear skin over night (Lol, the amount of times I was sucked in by advertising!)

There are lots of things that can help and there are things that don't do so much, you just have to see which treatment is best for you.

Also FYI a couple of common misconceptions about acne.

1) Only people who don't was get acne!
WRONG!! If you wash your face/affected area too much then it can actually make it worse because you are stimulating the sebaceous glands which will produce, yep you got it , more oil!

2) Only people who eat chocolate/fried food/have a bad diet get acne.
WRONG!! My dermatologist said that your diet doesn't really have anything to do with your acne.

The best thing you can do is arrange an appointment with a dermatologist.

They will be able to assess what type of acne you have and how best to treat it.

There are all sorts of things they can do and will continually monitor it so that if something is not working you can try something else until you find the right solution.

I eventually ended up going on Roaccutane (I believe it is called Accutane in the US) because mine was so bad and despite all of the horror stories you hear about people committing suicide the worst thing that happened to me was my lips going dry.
The only other bad thing about it was that it didn't do much for the scars I already have - but then it doesn't work miracles - so DON'T PICK!!!! I know har hard it is but don't do it, because you CAN get rid of Acne but you CANT get rid of deep scarring!

Hope everything get sorted and you have the lovely clear skin you want!

Hey I have no idea what witch hazel is, and Ive never heard of it. Try Neutrogena, doesnt matter what kinda of neutrogena. It works. but try the Acne Stress Control.
If you are a girl, you can also try the neutrogena makeup line, its helps prevent acne also.

HI, I am esthetican, (trained in skin care) witch hazel, made from a plant by the same name, is not good at clearing up acne. Too bad, because it is not expensive. It is simply a toner, that can restore your skins normal ph balance. It can be refreshing, and when applied with a cotton ball, can have an exfoliating affect. I would not recommend it for acne. What does work on acne are a few differnt products. Benzoil peroxide, salicylic acid...both in over the counter products. Birth control pills can work well on acne, as well as accutane, which also needs to be prescribed by a physician. Some people have luck using Tea Tree Oil, which is contained in Origins acne products. Full strenght, it smells very strong, but it works. And it cost less than buying Origins products. you can get tea tree oil at any health food or vitamin store.
There are different kinds of acne, so a dermatologist or esthetician could recommend a product for your acne.

Hope this helps

Michele
