speed of light!

Question Posted Tuesday July 17 2007, 1:28 am

why is it impossible to travel faster than the speed of light? and i dont get how light travels that quick.. or why we cant have like machines such as planes travel faster than it. any theories on what would happen when you travel faster than light? my sister says that like also planes travel faster than sound.. how is that possible? what are these like speeds of sound and light? i dont get it. and my sis also thinks that when you travel faster than light you could go to like a black hole or something? btw my sis is 14 and im 13.. so please put it in terms i can kinda understand. thanks!

e=mc^2
Energy=mass*universal constant(speed of light)^2

If energy(speed) increases, mass(weight) increases. As you approach the speed of light, mass approaches infinity. It therefore becomes exponentially harder to reach the speed of light.

Think of it this way. A guy offers to sell you 90% of the pyramids for $10,000. You accept. He offers to sell you 90% of the remaining portion for $20,000. The next portion ofr $40,000, the next for $80,000, etc. You'll never actually own the entire thing, just like you'll never actually reach the speed of light.

A way that might be possible is to raise the speed of light in an area around the vehicle, but we don't have the technology for that yet.

why is it impossible to travel faster than the speed of light? because light is really freaking fast! think of it this way. the speed of light is the time it takes for light from say, the sun to reach your eyes. or maybe even the time it takes between when you turn on the light in your room to the time that you actually see the light. it is basically an instant thing when you turn lights on, but light actually has to travel from the bulb to your eye. as you can imagine, especially when we talk about looking at stars or the sun or something, that is really freaking fast. i forget what the actual speed of light is, but you can look it up at wikipedia.org. i remember learning about it in science class but i don't remember the actual numbers. i hope this is making sense so far. i personally think that if you could travel faster than light, you would probably catch on fire or something. sound, however, does not travel nearly as fast as light does. sound is basically sound waves. whenever there is a thunderstorm, and you see lightning, and then you hear thunder a few seconds later, that is an example of how sound travels. if the lightning struck a couple miles up the road, it would still take a while for you to hear it. if you wanted to know the exact speed of sound, wikipedia.org should have that too. as for the black hole thing, nobody really knows. you can probably read theories on it, but scientists haven't proven anything yet. they can't exactly venture inside one to see what it's like, because well, it's a black hole. ok, so to recap, light travels extraordinarily fast. have you ever heard of a lightyear? that is the distance that light travels in a year. so... that's a really long way. if light travels at, say, 300,000 miles a second (i made that up), then think about how many seconds are in a year. a whole lot! so that's a long way. when something is multiple lightyears away in outerspace, they are basically saying that it is a really freaking long way away. and as i said before, sound travels in sound waves and therefore does not travel as fast, especially if there is stuff in the way. like you have a brick wall between you and somebody you're eavesdropping on. the sound is not as good as if you were standing right next to them. it's the same thing with the sun and a shadow. if you are outside getting a tan and a cloud moves in front of the sun, it blocks the light so it becomes darker. and speaking of the word "dark", i read somewhere that that is not an actual scientific term... the correct term is "absence of light"... is that not the weirdest thing ever? anyway, i really hope that i helped, because that's all i know about speed of whatever.

hey

why is it possible to travel faster than the speed of light? anything is possible. why don't you get that light travels that quick? light is primarily made up of electrons, and these electrons are SO small that they can travel at such a rate.

my theory is that we will experience a time warp. that we will be transported to a different time, either in the future or in the past.

we can't have airplanes travel faster than the speed of light cause humans aren't that technologically advanced. machines are so bulky... light is just a bunch of little pieces traveling together. if we had like, 235032984320 pieces of metal [which would still not be possible cause metal pieces aren't even close to being the size of electrons] then it would get us going a little faster.

actually, concords travel faster than the speed of sound, not airplanes. it's possible because in the world we live in, sound has to go through a LOT of stuff before it hits our ears. like look, sound waves can only be heard if there's something that the sound bounces off of. in space, there's nothing. therefore, there's no sound. but there's soo much dust & everything in our world that the sound needs to bounce off of before it hits our ears that it's very slow. the speed of sound is 340.29 m/second. the speed of light is 299,792,458 m/second.

it is said that black holes are a time warp. if you go into one & happen to not die, you would be transported to another time in the past or future.

From Ask.com:

speed of light (′spēd əv ′līt)

(electromagnetism) The speed of propagation of electromagnetic waves in a vacuum, which is a physical constant equal to exactly 299,792.458 kilometers per second. Also known as electromagnetic constant; velocity of light.

(over 186 thousand miles/second)

speed of sound

The speed at which sound travels in a given medium under specified conditions. The speed of sound at sea level in the International Standard Atmosphere is 1, 108 feet per second (or 658 knots, or 1, 215 kilometers per hour).

(761 mph)

Yes, there are planes that travel faster than the speed of sound. They make what is called a "sonic boom" once they break the sound barrier.

I don't know if this all answers your question, but I hope it gives you some sort of idea. :)
