hamster or gerbil?

Question Posted Sunday July 15 2007, 8:24 pm

ok, I've decided to get either a hamster or a gerbil. I've done a LOT of research on both but I want opinions from some one who actually has one or the other to give me an opinion. so tell me, Hamster or gerbil?

i have had a gerbile in the past and a 2 hamsters right now.

i think gerbiles eat more, and chew alot of things up so i always gave it paper towel rolls and stuff. but they are louder than hamsters. they eat and drink alot and chew so it makes alot of noise, expecially at night if you have them in your room. and also i would have houses and things and they like them and will go in them, except they will end up chewing it all up. i had a house to be chewed up and a wheel and was left with only then wire holder. i had to buy a chew proof water bottle cause it made the other one leek. if you want to hold them they will run and jump off your hand. also it bit quite often.

now i have 2 hamsters. i like them because the are more calm and do not make alot of noise. they do not chew much up. i gave them a cardboard box and they have not chewed it up, unlike a gerbil. they are quiet and do not eat and drink as much. i take them out alot and set them on my desk. they walk around but then curl up and sleep. you can hold them without them biting me or jumping off.

so i recomend a hamster, but it really is up to what you want. something more exciting to play with or something cute to hold.

i would choose gerbils, gerbils are none nopternal animals.( awake at day and asleep at night ) so there active when you are. hamsters in other words asre asllep all day and dont like to be bothered. gerbils arew very playfull and rarely bite. it depends what age group your going for. normaly people would chooose hansters but gerbils are the better option to choose. ive had both, and atm i have a gerbil,

They're not particularly different, except that gerbils have to live in same-sex pairs and hamsters live by themselves (except for the dwarf hamsters, who also live in pairs). Both hamsters and gerbils are good pets, and have practically the same requirements (food, housing, water). If you get gerbils, be prepared to provide housing large enough for the pair.

Personally, I love hamsters. I think it's wayy easier to bond with a hamster, because gerbils bond with their cagemates--but that's just my experience.

They're pretty much the same really, they just eat different kinds of food and such. Me personally, I like gerbils. I think they are much cuter especially the white ones with the red eyes!

Gerbils however can get fairly large, as with a hamster you can get like a dwarf one and they stay little forever. They have about the same life span, and they smell equally bad if you don't clean their cage.

Hamsters and Gerbils are both a lot of work. I had a pet hamster, and I had to clean the cage just like I would a gerbil.
I like hamsters better, and people who have had both said that hamsters were more friendly. I would say hamster.

Good luck with your pet:]
