Oil refineries are generally on coastal states such as Alabama, Florida, California, etc. It obviously costs money to ship the gas to the other states so states that are farther away from the refineries, so that's why in centralized states like North and South Dakota, Arizona, Nebraska, Colorado, etc. it is more expensive. By September the prices should start going down.
Also, we get close to 90% of our oil from the middle east, which is why alot of people believe we are at war. But lets not get into politics. Basically, it's so expensive because of shipping it and that it is such a high demand for oil. In Hawaii it's close to 7 dollars a gallon. Be glad you don't live there! And oil companies who supply the gas are marking it up *a lot*; Saudi Aramco, the largest oil company, makes 350 Billion dollars a year. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
ASAPcamille answered Sunday July 15 2007, 5:34 pm: Since there are so many people in demand for it, then they can increase the prices. It all has to do with supply and demand. They can get away with it, because cars need gas to run. Sometimes, if you go to Stop and Shop (the grocery store), then on your reciept there is a coupon for 10 cents off each gallon at any stop and shop gas station. I personally havent seen these gas stations, but they may not have them near me.
