I work at a resort, as a housekeeper and dishwasher. I do dishwashing two days a week.
For some reason, I get severe back pain whenever I'm doing dishwashing. I've done some research, but a lot of the ideas they give don't really help me; I can't change my work surroundings, and I don't have the option of standing with one foot on a step stool, because I have to walk a lot.
Any ideas as to why my back is hurting so badly? And any tips (from someone with similar experience, preferably. I don't need research, since I already did that!) as to what to do to fix this? I'm in so much pain by the end of my 8 hour shift that I have trouble breathing!
Additional info, added Saturday July 7 2007, 3:29 pm: A bit more info... I'm in the middle of the mountains, 2 hours away from the nearest town. That means I can't really see a doctor.
Also, I wear hiking shoes while I'm working, because I need closed-toed shoes, and those are the only ones I have that don't slip all over the place.. I've known many people with back problems, and after seeing one of these, things have improved greatly. Just ensure that if you do this, that they are fully qualified, and preferably find one on a recommendation from someone you know.
Do you wear flatish shoes for this job as this can affect posture causing pain? You could also try wearing a back support on the days you need to wash dishes. You could find these at an orthopedic specialist shop, or on line.
I've included a website with a picture so that you get the idea of what they look like. The prices vary.

Try to stand as straight as possible when your washing dishes or as bended over as you can. At night lay flat on your stomach or on your back. Do not sleep curled up! I know it's so comfortable but the straighter your back is the better. Maybe you should try somewarm showers in the morning and sit with your back straight too. It hurts but it's molding the back back into the correct comfortable shape it should be. =) Hope I helped! [ XxIzabellersxX's advice column | Ask XxIzabellersxX A Question ]
Hollister answered Saturday July 7 2007, 2:21 am: It could just be sore from bending over & you might just be worrying too much. From what you are saying though, it doesnt sound like that. You might have scoliosis, just get it checked with a doctor and see what he has to say.
