It all began with Punk music, punk music is defined by a fast paced tempo, or beat. Punk is also a subculture, and from the rebellious members of the punk subculture spawned hardcore music, a much faster and garage band like type of music. Hardcore music talked about society, and relationships more than punks and government. Both are considered punk however. Eventually hardcore spawned a bunch of people who couldn't stand the mosh pits and rough crowds, so basically they take the same lyrics as hardcore music, and toned them down... giving you EMOTIONAL hardcore. You really cant get more in touch with your feelings than hardcore already was, emo just succeeds in getting in touch with your feminine side :/
Unlike emo, hardcore is trying to make a positive difference, and their median is music. Emo is just bitching and wanting everyone to do shit for them. Lazy bastards.

Emo stands for "emotional" Its the name given to people, (especially teens) who wear dark clothes, keep their hair over their face, and are usually cutters. The big stereotype is that they are very "woe is me" They cry over nothing, and claim to be very depressed, and that their life is terrible. The guys usually wear girls jeans sagged halfway down their butts. Its a stereotype, but that is what "emo" means.
