Question Posted Thursday July 5 2007, 6:50 pm

I'm in middle school and well I started going to that school about 3 or 4 months ago and we were on a break for this month and we are going back Monday. I'm pretty nervous. I made friends that are really awesome and I have good teachers too. My friends welcomed me in like that. But my problem is I really don't feel very smart. I feel like I'm not going to pass this year and my fear is getting held back. I'm taking art and Spanish but math is killing me. I don't know anything of it. Because I was homeschooled so I really can't understand this. Any advice how to survive school?

Ouch, math is tough. If you don't ask for help either, it'll keep getting tougher. If you're uncomfortable asking questions in class, go up to your teacher at the end of class and ask if you can have help. Ask if you can come after school, or if you can come during your free period, because you don't really understand. Also, my school does this, but I'm not sure if yours does, if you have a guidance office, go there and talk to somebody about a tutor. High school students volunteer as tutors for younger kids, at my school. If you're not positive if that is offered at your school, it's worth a try to ask. Make sure that you ask before it's too late! I had trouble in math last year and I stayed afterschool almost everyday with my math teacher because I had a bad grade, and my average raised atleast 10 points. Another piece of advice is, ALWAYS do your homework. That shows that if you ask your teacher for help, she knows that you really are trying and you really do care about your grades. If you don't do your homework, then she'll assume that you're blowing off class and she doesn't want to waste her time if you're not doing the work that's neccessary. Good luck, and I'm sure you'll do fine! <3

Relax you will do fine! Take time out to study by making flashcards (for vocab-yes math has vocab) and by practicing problems in your math book. (A lot of math books have answers for some problems in the back). You can do that for all your subjects. Also, maybe your teacher can help you or you can get a tutor. You might be able to get an older kid to help you because when you are in high school you need volunteer hours.

Good luck!

I had a hard time with math too. REally hard. I hate it myself. But when I was in middle school, they didn't have tutors. Do you go to a public school? They have to provide tutors to the students' who ask. Since you already know that you are in trouble, ask right away. Don't let it get worse. My son did that, and he ended up failing. And he has to go back. (He was a senior in HIgh School) He knew long before the end of the year that he was having trouble. He could have had a tutor. Please ask for help in Math. I think they will give it to you.
