Dying Betta :(

Question Posted Monday June 25 2007, 12:46 am

Okay so I need help. And FAST! I've got a male betta who I've had for a short amount of time now and today he decided to show me that he indeed does know how to jump. I was cleaning his water like I ALWAYS have and I put meds in it because I expect him to be sick and I left him in a little bowl for awhile to let the medicine dilute in his water. LIKE I ALWAYS HAVE. Well, this time I come back a few hours later and he is out of the bowl and in the tub no longer moving. He moved when I touched him so he wasn't completely dead, just totally black on the side he was laying on. So I tossed him quickly into his new bowl and at first it wasnt too bad. he floated vertically with his mouth above the water and he swam just fine when I chased him with my finger. Now however is another story. He acts as though he is paralyzed and only his little fins would move. I can twirl him around in the water and he wont move. I still think he's breathing and he moves after awhile of bothering him. But not very far. He just twitches a little. Well I'm very worried about him and I don't want him to die. Is there anything I can do, or is all hope lost? PLEASE HELP ME!

First of all, putting your hands in the bowl is a little dangerous. You should never do it often, or at all exept when you are cleaning it. If he is jumping out, put a lid over the top. If he seems stiff, he might have had a reaction to the medicine or something in the water, or the temperature. Maybe you should take him to some kind of vet. I hope this helps.

Well, you didn't say when you cleaned the bowl, which would help a lot, but I'm going to assume this all happened in one day =)

Leave him alone. He seems really stressed out: I used to have a betta and he wouldn't move for up to two days after I changed his water. Don't touch him, don't even put your hand in the water (they could also contaminate the water by the way). Turn off the light in the aquarium. Don't do anything to him for two days. Hopefully he is ok, just scared to death.

Aww poor guy, I don't think there is much you can do for him now. Since he can't swim well and they breathe air from the surface, put him in shallow water, a few inches deep, so he can reach the surface easier.
