LM answered Friday June 22 2007, 6:08 pm: Okay, Jenny Craig, Weight watchers, groups like that, yeah they work. But all they do is tell you to eat a balanced diet, not to completely deprive yourself of anything completely. And the meetings are there for support and stuff. They work well, but are expensive, so only use them as a last resort.
Focus on things that are totally healthy- fruits and vegetables, whole-grain bread [or at least not refined flour white bread] 1% or skim milk, etc. Remember that lowfat stuff still has calories, and often has an insane amount of sugar. Be smart about what you're eating. Full-fat dressing won't kill you, since you only use 2 tablespoons. Half a carton of icecream is too much- limit yourself to the occassional scoop of whatever kind you want [you'll be less likely to pig out if you don't deprive yourself]
Exercise is the biggest thing. Develop a routine that works for you, but don't make it routine. Makes sense? Think of exercise as a way of improving yourself- and not a daily, 20-30 minute chore. Try to do SOMETHING everyday- walk or run across town, do Pilates, do 25 crunches and pushups every commercial break. As long as you're moving, you'll accomplish what you want.
This site is great; check it out and use the calculators to determine your ideal body weight/ resting metabolic rate [a rough estimate of how many calories you need each day to function] and a calorie counter [but don't get paranoid about it]
