1) DO NOT microwave a cd/dvd. The dye (the part the laser writes to) is based on a toxic substance. You don't want bits of this in your microwave, and the only way to be safe is to replace the microwave with a new one. (Hopefully the answer I am referring to will be edited by the time you see this.)
2) Magnets have no effect, at all, whatsoever on optical media like you are talking about. That person is completely misinformed.
Ok, so how DO you get the data gone? Well, as has been mention, if it is a RW (ReWriteable) then you can format the disc using the CDR creation software on your computer.
If it is a standard CD, they are so cheap there is no reason to worry about re-using them, so discard this one and begin again.
You weren't clear on if you wanted to destroy the disc to get rid of stuff, or to erase and re-use it.
If you wish to destroy the data, you need to destroy the disc.
Now the fun part:
Take the disc out side, find some pavement (asphalt) and place the disc on the ground with THE LABEL SIDE DOWN (The side you write on) then put your foot on the disc and slide it around.
It is very, very easy to ruin a CD or DVD disc this way.
The label side is more fragile that the other side, and this is the reason for doing it that way.
When you pick up the disc, any place you can see through the disc is gone forever.
You can also use sandpaper to do this.
I have a paper shredder that also does CDs and DVD-R discs, but I don't think I have ever used it for that.
LM answered Monday June 18 2007, 7:34 pm: If it's a CD-R, you're probably stuck. I've figured out how to ADD stuff, but not erase. the disc is usually finalized when you burn something on it. If you've got something incriminating on it, run the CD over with a rolly chair a few times, scratch it up with a nail file or razorblade, and snap it in half. That should work just fine.
I'm willing to bet there's a way around the "finalized" step, though. If theymos doesn't answer this question, ask him directly to his inbox. If there's a way to do it, he probably knows :) [ LM's advice column | Ask LM A Question ]
theymos answered Monday June 18 2007, 7:34 pm: If the cd is a CD-RW, then you just write over it with anything. Fill it up with your favorite music and the old data will be erased. If it's a CD-R, you can't. You need to physically destroy the disk. **DangerNerd informs me that disks contain poisonous chemicals. Sorry I recommended microwaving it :( . Other ways of ruining disks are acid, sanding the surface, and melting.**
**Sorry, lauraxomichelle, there's no way to remove data from a CD-R, even if it hasn't been finalized. This is because of the disk's construction. If you want the technical details, you can ask me a private question. Anonymous334, refrigerator-type magnets work only on floppy disks.** [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
