What is a meal plan?

At a college why do they ask or say that you need a meal plan??? what is it and why do they say if u dont have a meal plan u cant stay at that 4 year college??

all a meal plan is..is that you pay money ahead of time and you use that to buy food at the school's cafeterias. they want/make you buy one to make sure that you eat and so that they make bussiness instead of you going out to unknown places to eat. in a way its kinda pointless because most colleges have crappy food for you first two years but if you really want to go to that college...
