ok, i really havent been into religion at all so i would like to know what being christian is. and whats the difference between different things like lutherns, prespiterians, etc. that kind of stuff because ive heard people saying theres a difference. all i know is that im christian. and if i wanted to get involved with religion where should i start? and going to church isnt one of the ways i want to do it at first cause i wanna get a backround about it first before i go. thanks in advance..
There are many different Christian churches. The Catholic church is the oldest and for about 1400 years was the only Christian church. During the middle ages, some people disagreed with some of the church's practices, so they broke away and started new Christian churches/religions. These "new" churches include Luthern, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, etc., and are known as Protestant churches [root word: protest, as in they protested against the Catholic church]. So, any Christian church that is not Catholic is known as Protestant.
All Christian churches share many of the same basic beliefs. However, they also have slight differences in the way they practice these beliefs. Take Baptism, for example. In some churches, people are baptised by being fully immersed under the water; in other churches, baptisms are performed by sprinkling water over the person. To some people, these differences are not a big deal. But some people feel very strongly that things should be done one way or another.
It would be very difficult to explain the differences between all the Christian religions right here! But there are many, many books that are just about comparing different churches. I would suggest going to a good book store and take a look at the Religion section. Some of the books are extremely thick and detailed, but there are others that sum it up briefly and give you a basic comparison. The store clerk should be able to help you find the kind you're looking for.
You said you didn't want to jump right in and start going to church, but it might be really helpful to visit a few while you're making your decision. Ask some friends to take you to their churches and check out as many as you can! That will give you the best idea of what each church is like, and will help you decide which one you feel most comfortable with.

Although some denominations were created before the Protestant Reformation, most fall under the "Protestant" category. If you are unsure which denomination you wish to belong to, or if you wish to not belong to any specific denomination, attend a non- denominational church. Lutherans, Methodists, Catholics, Baptists, Prespiterians & whatnot are all branced off from Christiantity. It's Christianity with some beliefs that are different.
Being "Christian" is believing in god, following his way, praying, going to church, being saved, not commiting sins, doing confession, getting baptized, accomplishing your communion & confirmation, getting saved, & staying a virgin until marriage.
Click searh for all of those, and it'll bring up sites with information about what you need to know about each. But you don't necessarily have to conform to Christianity. There are a ton of other religions that might interest you. [ christina's advice column | Ask christina A Question ]

A christian is: a saved person that is trying to follow Christ and His will for your life.
I was raised lutheran and methodist have friends that use to be catholic, most teach that you have to work to get to heaven. That is called legalism and nowhere in the Bible does it say that. I am a christian and I go to a Baptist church.
Are you saved?
Do you know what salvation means?
If the answer to those is yes, that is very good
According to the bible that is where it all starts from. Getting in to the Word of God to fine what God says about things. You don't have to Go to church to get to heaven but it is a comandment of God.
I would try to find a good bible based baptist church. If what they teach doesnot go along with what Gods word says then don't go back.
please keep in mind Gods word is not always nice
but it is true and He gives you what He knows you need from it.
