guys get hard because they are either turned on and horny OR it could be a narb ( no reason boner) like they just sping up randomly.
what happens is blood rushes to the penis and the pressure in it causes it to rise and become harder.

When guys see/touch/hear/smell (trust me, i've heard weird stories) something sexually stimulating to them, for example a hot girl or someone they like, then their penis, which usually just hangs in front of them, raises up because it fills with blood. when a guy gets an erection (medical term for boner) then technically, he is ready for sex.
guys can also get boners through wet dreams.
